An Evening That Felt Like Home

An Evening That Felt Like Home

After three long years, I finally found myself back in Patna — the city where I was born, where I grew up, and where some of my happiest memories still quietly live. For me, Patna has never just been a place; it has always been a feeling. Even the thought of it has the strange power to take away half my worries and calm my restless mind. So when we planned a road trip to Nepal, somewhere deep inside me, the journey already felt worth it because I knew I would get to touch base in Patna again.
We were returning from Nepal after a wonderful but quick trip. Everyone in the car was exhausted, half asleep after the long drive, but I was wide awake, waiting impatiently for the first glimpse of Patna. I did not care if we stayed only for a few minutes, I just wanted to breathe the air of my city once again.
And then, we reached Patna.
For some reason, even the chaos felt comforting. The traffic, the crowded lanes, the familiar sounds, everything felt strangely beautiful. As we passed through the old roads and neighbourhoods, it felt as though the city was quietly welcoming me back home. The sun was beginning to set, painting the sky in soft shades of orange and pink. Warm summer evenings in Patna always had their own charm. People had started stepping out of their homes for evening walks, children were playing in the streets, neighbours stood outside chatting lazily, and every passing face seemed to carry an effortless smile.
Unlike the rushed life of metro cities, there was a softness in the air here. Nobody seemed to be running against time.
The birds chirped endlessly as they returned to their nests, their voices blending beautifully with the evening sounds of the city. Trees swayed gently in the warm breeze, tiny tea stalls buzzed with laughter and conversations, and the golden sunlight falling on the old buildings made everything look magical. Even the ordinary moments felt special. There was peace hidden inside the chaos, a kind of peace only home can give.
As I sat there quietly taking it all in, I realized how deeply I had missed this feeling. Sometimes, all the heart really longs for is familiarity, the comfort of roads you once knew by heart, the sound of a city that raised you, and an evening that asks nothing from you except to simply exist in it.
And maybe that was all I needed, one peaceful evening in Patna to gather enough calm and warmth to survive another three years in a busy city, while waiting to return once again to Patna for another relaxing evening.
